Old Sarum Way

Follows an ancient route connecting Salisbury Cathedral with the Iron Age hillfort of Old Sarum, covering roughly 3km of mostly flat terrain with one gradual climb to the historic ramparts. Suitable for families and generally buggy-friendly on firmer sections, though the hillfort itself has grassy slopes. Dogs welcome throughout. Worth doing for the stunning views over Salisbury and the chance to explore 5,000 years of history at the atmospheric Old Sarum ruins.

Cranborne Droves Way

Follows ancient drovers' routes across the Cranborne Chase, mixing gentle chalk downland with occasional moderate climbs through farmland and woodland. Terrain varies from grassy tracks to firmer paths, generally suitable for older children but uneven ground and stiles make it tricky for buggies. Dogs welcome on leads near livestock. The sweeping chalk ridge views and sense of walking historic trading routes used for centuries make this a rewarding countryside escape.

Loops through ancient Hale Purlieu woodland with gentle terrain on well-maintained forestry tracks, ideal for families and pushchairs with some firmer all-weather sections. Dogs welcome to explore beneath towering conifers and veteran oaks. The figure-of-eight design lets you choose a shorter or longer circuit depending on energy levels, with peaceful forest atmosphere and good chance of spotting deer in quieter moments.
