You wake to the sound of the Greta Beck rushing through the stones below, mist lifting off Swaledale's high moors, nothing but curlew calls and wind through heather.

This is proper wilderness shelter — a traditional stone bothy maintained for hillwalkers, backpackers and anyone seeking the raw edge of the Yorkshire Dales. One simple hut with sleeping platforms, a fireplace, four walls against the weather. You carry everything in, you carry everything out. Dog owners should check the policy beforehand, and campfires depend on conditions when you arrive. Open all year, which means midwinter solitude is yours if you want it, but also that you need to know what you're doing when the weather turns.

Facilities are whatever you bring. No running water, no warden, no shop three miles down a lane. This is bothy code country — respect the space, leave it cleaner than you found it, share the shelter without fuss. The kind of place where you earn your sleep and remember why you started walking in the first place.
