National Trust

Meanders through one of Britain's most dramatic Victorian gardens across mostly level paths and short flights of steps. Families with older children will enjoy it, but pushchairs struggle with the steps and narrower sections between exotic plantings. Dogs aren't permitted in National Trust gardens. Worth doing for the theatrical garden rooms, Chinese temple, Egyptian court and unexpected tunnels that make this feel like exploring a horticultural adventure rather than a standard stroll.

Staffordshire Way (Mow Cop-Rushton Spencer)

Follows undulating moorland between two charming villages, with moderate climbs through farmland and open countryside. The terrain includes stiles and uneven paths, making it unsuitable for buggies but manageable for older children comfortable with longer walks. Dogs welcome but must be kept under control near livestock. Rewards you with sweeping Cheshire Plain views and the dramatic hilltop folly at Mow Cop – a distinctive castle ruin that's visible for miles around.
