The salt tang of Loch Indaal drifts in on the breeze, and if you're lucky, you'll catch the peat smoke from one of Islay's famous distilleries carried across the water.

This modest hostel sits right in Port Charlotte village on Islay's western shore, offering both indoor bunks and camping pods for those who want a roof overhead without booking a full room. It's ideal for whisky pilgrims working their way round the island's distilleries, birdwatchers drawn to the marshes and beaches, or anyone exploring the Rhinns on foot or by bike. Dogs may be welcome but you'll need to ask ahead. The location puts you within easy walking distance of village amenities and the long sweep of beach that runs north toward Bruichladdich.

Wi-fi keeps you connected, and campfires might be possible but check when you arrive. It's a straightforward, year-round base rather than a bells-and-whistles campsite — the draw here is Islay itself, the light, the landscape, and that distinctive island pace.
