Tees Railway Path

Follows a disused railway line for nearly 10km through County Durham, meaning it's flat, well-surfaced and ideal for families, buggies and dogs. The traffic-free path connects Barnard Castle to Cotherstone alongside the River Tees, passing through gentle countryside with riverside views. Perfect for easy walks or cycling, though can be muddy after rain in some sections. A relaxed route where kids can run ahead safely.

Pennine Way - Bowes Loop

Tackles moderate inclines across moorland and pastoral farmland between Bowes village and the main Pennine Way route. Terrain includes grassy paths, some stony sections, and potentially boggy patches after rain—not suitable for buggies or very young children. Dogs welcome but keep on leads near livestock. Worth doing for the blend of Roman history (Bowes Castle ruins), sweeping Teesdale views, and a quieter alternative to the main trail's more rugged sections. Proper walking boots essential.

Pennine Way (Tan Hill to Middleton in Teesdale)

Tackles classic Pennine moorland with sustained climbs and descents across open fellside—this is remote, exposed terrain best suited to experienced walkers with proper gear. Definitely not buggy-friendly, and the boggy sections can challenge even keen dogs.
