South West Coast Path (Section 7: Instow to Westward Ho! )

Follows the estuary edge from Instow's sandy beach to Westward Ho!, mostly flat with one gentle climb near Abbotsham Cliffs. Perfect for families and buggies for the first half along the seafront promenade, though the clifftop section has steps and rougher paths. Dogs welcome throughout. Rewards you with expansive views across the Taw-Torridge estuary, rockpools to explore, and dramatic coastal scenery without the effort of Devon's steeper cliff paths.

Appledore Community Trail

Meanders through this historic shipbuilding village on mostly flat, paved paths perfect for buggies and young families. Dogs welcome on leads as you pass charming cottages, maritime heritage sites, and waterfront views across the Torridge estuary. Easy terrain throughout with gentle inclines only, making it accessible for all abilities. Worth doing for the blend of nautical history, pastel-painted streets, and estuary birdwatching opportunities.

South West Coast Path (Section 8: Westward Ho! to Clovelly)

National Trails

Follows dramatic North Devon coastline with steep, challenging ascents and descents through woodland and open clifftops. Not suitable for buggies or young children due to uneven terrain, steps, and significant elevation changes. Dogs welcome on leads near livestock and cliff edges. Rewards effort with stunning Atlantic views, secluded coves, and the picturesque village of Clovelly with its famous cobbled high street tumbling down to the harbour.

Follows dramatic clifftop paths and sandy stretches between two popular North Devon beaches, mixing moderate coastal climbs with easier beach and dune walking. Suitable for older children but not buggies due to steps, stiles and uneven coastal terrain. Dogs welcome on leads near livestock and seasonal beach restrictions may apply at Saunton Sands. Worth doing for sweeping Atlantic views, wildlife spotting opportunities, and the contrast between rugged headlands and the vast Braunton Burrows dune
