West Highland Way (High Route to Fort William)

Climbs steeply through forest before descending into Fort William – this is the tougher, more scenic alternative to the low route with rewarding views over Loch Linnhe. Rocky, uneven terrain with significant elevation gain makes it unsuitable for buggies and challenging for young children. Dogs welcome but keep on leads near livestock. The dramatic Highland vistas and sense of achievement make the extra effort worthwhile for capable walkers.

Ben Nevis Mountain Path

Climbs Britain's highest peak (1,345m) via a steep, well-maintained zigzag path with around 1,300m of ascent over roughly 10.5km return. Terrain is rocky and uneven, becoming boulder-strewn near the summit, with dramatic elevation gain making this a challenging 7-8 hour trek. Not suitable for young children or buggies—requires good fitness and proper mountain gear. Dogs allowed but must handle sustained steep climbs and exposed conditions. Tackles the dramatic finale of Scotland's most famous long-distance trail with a challenging ascent over the Devil's Staircase (550m), followed by a long descent through Lairigmor and woodland into Fort William. Steep, rugged terrain with exposed sections—not suitable for buggies or young children. Dogs welcome but must be fit and capable on rocky, sustained climbs. Rewards with sweeping Highland views and the satisfaction of completing beneath Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak.
