The tide retreats twice a day to reveal a causeway across the sands, and suddenly you're island-bound with the gulls and the big Solway sky overhead.

Dry Island isn't your usual campsite — it's a proper guest house on a tidal island, with a couple of camping pods for those who want the romance of sleeping outdoors without quite pitching a tent. Best suited to couples after something genuinely unusual, or small families keen on rock-pooling, birdwatching, and that slightly adventurous feeling of being cut off when the water comes back in. Dogs are welcome by arrangement, so worth asking when you book. The Solway coast here is all huge skies, wading birds, and that strange, liminal beauty of places half-land, half-sea.

There's wifi if you need the outside world, and you can ask about campfires on arrival — evenings are worth lingering over when the sun drops into the Firth. Open year-round, though winter crossings add a certain edge. Quiet, remote, and utterly memorable if you're after somewhere genuinely off the beaten track.
