Dogs welcome on leads near livestock. The combination of panoramic vistas and geological interest makes this a Peak District classic worth the effort.

Mam Tor Circular Walk, High Peak

Climbs to Mam Tor's 517m summit via steep, stepped sections – expect a proper leg workout but the 360-degree Peak District views are phenomenal. The ridge walk itself is easier, following a paved path along dramatic edges. Not suitable for buggies or very young children due to the ascent and drop-offs. Dogs welcome but keep them close near cliff edges and grazing sheep. Best for confident walkers aged 8+ who want dramatic scenery without committing to a full day hike.

Crook Hill Circular (Ethel), High Peak

Climbs steadily through National Trust moorland with rewarding views across the High Peak from Crook Hill's summit. The 11.5km loop covers exposed, uneven terrain with moderate ascents – best suited for older children and confident walkers rather than buggies or toddlers. Dogs welcome to roam the heathery paths. Worth it for the sense of space and dramatic Pennine scenery without the crowds of nearby Stanage Edge.
