The first light over the Cuillin catches the white walls of this working croft-turned-hostel, and you wake to the bleat of sheep and the wind rattling across the moor.

This is base camp for walkers tackling the ridge, wild swimmers braving the fairy pools, and anyone chasing Skye on a shoestring. The pods and bunk rooms suit solo travellers and small groups who'd rather spend money on ferry pints than fancy bedding—it's straightforward, sociable, and properly positioned for getting out onto the island's trails at first light. Dogs are welcome by arrangement, so hill runners with collies in tow often pass through.

Facilities are basic and functional—this isn't a place for luxuries, it's a place to sleep between adventures. Campfires are a check-on-arrival situation depending on conditions and where you're pitched. Open all year, which matters when you're chasing off-season solitude or winter hillwalking. The vibe is communal, outdoorsy, and refreshingly unpretentious—kit drying by the door, trail beta swapped over breakfast, headtorches on by dark.

Cnoc Trail

Climbs steadily to the summit of Cnoc Mòr above Glenelg, rewarding effort with sweeping views across the Sound of Sleat to Skye. Terrain is rough hillside with grassy paths and some rocky sections—steep in places, so proper footwear essential. Not suitable for buggies or very young children due to gradient and uneven ground. Dogs welcome but keep under control near sheep. A classic Highland hill walk for families with older, confident walkers seeking dramatic coastal panoramas.

Anavig Trail

Traces the rugged coastline of South Uist with moderate terrain including grassy paths, rocky sections, and gentle ascents. Suitable for older children with walking experience, but uneven ground makes it tricky for buggies. Dogs welcome to enjoy the windswept beaches and Atlantic views. Worth doing for dramatic seascapes, wildlife spotting (seals and seabirds common), and the sense of walking through untouched Hebridean wilderness.

Marine Mammal Trail

Follows the stunning coastline around Glenelg Bay, offering spectacular chances to spot seals, otters, dolphins and porpoises from various viewpoints. Terrain varies from flat waterside paths to moderately steep coastal sections with some uneven ground and steps. Not suitable for buggies due to terrain changes and narrow clifftop stretches, though families with older children who can manage rocky paths will love the wildlife encounters.
