The beam sweeps overhead every few seconds, throwing white light across the clifftop grass before the darkness rushes back in — camping at Britain's most southerly point on the Kintyre peninsula feels properly wild and wonderfully remote.

This is one for couples after something different, or anyone who fancies waking up in a pod or guest room with nothing but Atlantic rollers below and the Irish coast visible on clear days. The Mull of Kintyre itself is legendary — windswept, dramatic, steeped in maritime history — and you're staying in the converted keeper's cottages and grounds of the lighthouse that's guided sailors since 1788. It's a long, winding single-track road to get here, but that's entirely the point.

Facilities aren't specified in detail, so check ahead about what's provided in the pods versus the guest house rooms. Dogs are welcome by arrangement, and campfires may be possible depending on conditions — ask when you arrive. It's open year-round, though winter visits are properly atmospheric if you don't mind the wind. Quiet, isolated, and utterly memorable.

Kintyre Way

Stretches 100 miles down the Kintyre Peninsula from Tarbert to Southend, mixing coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, forest tracks and quiet inland lanes. Terrain varies from gentle shoreline sections to steep climbs over moorland headlands – definitely challenging with significant elevation over the full route. Not suitable for buggies; older children who are experienced hikers could manage sections. Dogs welcome throughout. Rewards you with sweeping Atlantic views, historical sites including Saddell
