John Muir Way (South Queensferry to Edinburgh part 2)

Follows the Edinburgh waterfront from South Queensferry towards the city centre, mostly flat on paved paths and cycle tracks running alongside the Firth of Forth. Excellent for families, buggies and dogs – smooth surfaces throughout with minimal elevation. Offers superb views of the Forth Bridges, passing through Cramond and Silverknowes with plenty of beaches and cafés en route. A genuinely accessible coastal stretch that connects historic sites with urban nature.

The Royal Mile

Stroll through Edinburgh's most famous historic street connecting the Castle to Holyroodhouse Palace along centuries-old cobblestones. Entirely flat, fully paved, and hugely family-friendly, though cobbles can challenge buggies. Dogs welcome on leads. Packed with medieval closes, street performers, shops, and pubs—essential Edinburgh sightseeing that's more atmospheric early morning or evening when crowds thin.

Water of Leith Walkway (Slateford to Leith)

Follows Edinburgh's historic river for 12.5 miles through woodland, past old mills and quirky sculptures, mostly flat on tarmac and compacted paths with occasional steps at bridges. Perfect for families and buggies on the lower sections, though some stretches near Dean Village involve stairs. Dogs welcome throughout. Showcases Edinburgh's hidden green corridor from leafy suburbs to the harbour, passing Dean Village's stunning gorge and the Gallery of Modern Art – brilliant urban escape with café
