South Tyne Trail

Follows the South Tyne River for 37km from Alston to the outskirts of Haltwhistle through former lead-mining country. Mostly flat, traffic-free path on old railway trackbed—ideal for families, buggies and dogs. Passes dramatic viaducts, wooded gorges and open moorland with genuine wilderness feel. Popular with cyclists too, so stay aware. Worth it for the easy-going distance and ever-changing Pennine scenery without the climbs.

Weardale Way

Follows the River Wear for 77 miles through County Durham from Wearhead to Sunderland coast, mixing moorland, farmland, woodland and riverside paths with moderate climbs in upper sections, flattening towards the coast.
