The morning mist rolls down from the Carneddau mountains and settles around this mountain hostel, perched high in the Ogwen Valley where the sound of waterfalls carries across the slate and heather.

This is a proper base camp for walkers and climbers — hostel bunks and camping pods set right in the heart of Eryri, with some of Snowdonia's best ridge walks leaving almost from the doorstep. The site suits groups planning a few days on the peaks, couples after a simple mountain escape, or anyone who wants to wake up already halfway up. The Ogwen Valley is classic North Wales hill country — all cwms and crags and sheep-cropped grass — and Helfa Fawr puts you right in it.
