The tang of salt air drifts in from Southampton Water, and beyond the terrace roofs you catch the glint of cranes along the dockside — this is a port city that still hums with departures and arrivals.

The Regent runs a proper guest house with rooms under the main roof, but also offers a camping pod out back for those after something simpler or travelling with a dog (worth asking ahead about your four-legged friend). It's a good shout if you're catching an early ferry, visiting family at the university, or using Southampton as a base for the New Forest without committing to canvas. The pod gives you a roof and a lock, the guest house gives you a cooked breakfast — pick your pace.

You're in a residential pocket of the city, so don't expect meadows or moorings, but Southampton's parks, the medieval walls, and the waterfront are all walkable. Campfires aren't a given — check when you arrive. It's functional, friendly, year-round shelter in a city that's more interesting than people give it credit for.

The QE2 Mile

Flat, paved mile-long route through Southampton's revitalized waterfront, perfect for buggies and families with young children. Dogs welcome on leads. Links cultural attractions including SeaCity Museum and the Tudor House, with views across the marina. Makes an easy urban stroll for stretching legs, with plenty of cafés and facilities nearby for refreshment stops.

Bargeman's Walk

Follows the historic towpath along the Itchen Navigation between Winchester and Shawford, mostly flat on compacted earth and gravel with occasional muddy patches after rain. Ideal for families and buggies, though some sections narrow near locks. Dogs welcome and love the waterside setting. Combines industrial heritage with peaceful riverside scenery, passing working locks, weirs, and meadows where kingfishers and herons often appear—a gentle immersion in Hampshire's canal history.

The Chestnut Trail

Winds through ancient woodland and open countryside with gentle to moderate inclines, offering lovely views across Hampshire's rolling landscape. Suitable for families with older children who can manage uneven forest paths and some steeper sections, though not ideal for buggies due to tree roots and narrow tracks. Dogs welcome and will love the woodland scents and stream crossings. Worth it for the mature chestnut trees, seasonal bluebells, and peaceful escape from nearby towns.
