The smell of fresh coffee drifts from the guest house kitchen as you lace your boots, ready to tackle Glasgow's West Highland Way or the hills just beyond the city limits.

This is a walker's base rather than a traditional campsite — a guest house with camping pods out back for those who want a roof but not quite four walls. It suits hikers passing through Glasgow, couples doing the Way in stages, or anyone who wants a proper bed and breakfast before heading into the Trossachs or Loch Lomond. Dogs are welcome by arrangement, so you can bring your trail companion. The setting puts you within reach of Glasgow's transport links and the start of some of Scotland's finest long-distance routes.

Inside there's guest house comfort; outside, the pods offer something simpler. Campfires need checking on arrival — they may depend on the season or which pitch you're in. It's open all year, which matters if you're walking in the shoulder seasons when the high routes are still snowy but the lowlands are walkable.

Dougalston Trail

Follows a disused railway line through East Dunbartonshire with flat, well-surfaced paths ideal for families, buggies and dogs. The gentle trail connects residential areas with woodland sections, offering an easy escape into nature without significant inclines. Perfect for casual strolls or cycling, with good accessibility throughout and opportunities to spot local wildlife along the tree-lined route.

Allander Walkway

Follows the Allander Water through Milngavie's leafy outskirts, mostly flat with good paths suitable for buggies and young families. Dogs welcome on this gentle riverside amble. The route connects residential areas with open parkland, offering easy escape into nature with ducks, wildflowers and occasional herons along the water's edge. Perfect for short leg-stretchers or longer strolls depending how far you follow the burn.

West Highland Way (Milngavie to Drymen part 1)

Follows a gentle, well-maintained path from Milngavie through Mugdock Wood and Dumgoyne countryside, with gradual climbs offering views towards the Campsie Fells. Suitable for families and older children, though the 19km distance is ambitious for little legs—buggies won't manage the forest sections. Dogs welcome on leads near livestock. Classic Scottish long-distance walking with good facilities at both ends, making it an excellent first taste of the West Highland Way.
