You wake to the rush of water over stone and nothing else — the Avon River crossing is right outside, and silence this deep feels almost too loud.

This is true mountain shelter, not a campsite: a simple bothy for hillwalkers, climbers and anyone prepared to trek into the Cairngorms plateau on foot. You'll need full kit, navigation skills and a respect for big, remote country. The refuge hut offers basic four-wall sanctuary after a long day on the Cairngorms' high passes — it's for those drawn to Scotland's wildest ground, where the nearest road is hours away and the mountains feel genuinely serious. Dogs are welcome by arrangement, though check beforehand.

The hut itself is spartan — a roof, walls, maybe a sleeping platform — and facilities are whatever you carry in. Open year-round, so winter visits mean proper gear and experience. Ask about campfire rules when you arrive. This is wilderness camping in its truest form: no frills, no guarantees, just shelter earned by effort and the kind of quiet you can't buy.
