The wooden door creaks open onto a single stone-flagged room where the wind finds every gap in the shutters and the silence, when it drops, rings in your ears.

This is mountain bothy camping at its purest — a wilderness hut high on Duinish where tenters and those sleeping inside share the same wild Isle of Skye hillside. It suits walkers who've earned their pitch on foot, couples after proper solitude, and anyone ready to carry everything in and leave no trace. Dogs by arrangement, so check before you set off with your collie.

Facilities are whatever you bring: there's shelter from the weather, four walls and a roof, but this is off-grid in the truest sense. Campfires may be allowed depending on conditions, so ask when you arrive and respect the land. Open all year, which means midges in summer and howling gales in winter — but also sunrises over the Cuillin that stop you mid-brew. Come prepared, come humble, and you'll have one of Scotland's wildest nights under canvas or thatch.
