The morning mist lifts off Borrowdale's valley floor, and you're camped at the very foot of England's wettest inhabited place — with Scafell Pike, Great Gable and the high fells rising steep and sudden all around.

This is a walkers' site first and foremost, a proper mountain basecamp for anyone tackling the Lakes' toughest routes. Seathwaite sits at the road's end in one of the most dramatic valleys in Cumbria, and the pitches welcome tents and campervans alike. It's basic, honest, and utterly unpretentious — you're here for the peaks, not the frills. Dogs are welcome by arrangement, so check ahead if you're bringing one.

You'll find hot showers onsite, and that's about all you need after a day scrambling up Styhead Pass or conquering Great End. Campfires depend on conditions, so ask when you arrive. The vibe is old-school fell-walking friendly — early starts, muddy boots, folk swapping route notes over a brew. If you want solitude and serious mountains within minutes of your tent, this is it.

Thorneythwaite Farm Picnic and Waterfall walk, North Lakes Outdoors
