The morning mist lifts off Loch Lomond just beyond the village, and Gartmore wakes to the calls of wood pigeons in the old estate trees.

This suits couples after a walking base in the Trossachs, or anyone wanting a roof overhead between hilldays — there's a guest house for proper beds and a camping pod if you fancy something smaller but still weatherproof. Gartmore itself is a handsome conservation village, tucked between the Highlands and Lowlands, with Rob Roy country stretching north and Glasgow only half an hour south.
