The Ness slides past at the end of the garden, wide and brown after rain, gulls hanging over the current where it picks up speed toward the firth.

This is one for couples after a Highland base with a proper bed, or walkers who've done their miles and want a hot shower and an even hotter breakfast. The guest house sits in Inverness itself—so you're stepping out to cafés, the castle, riverside paths into town—but there are camping pods too if you want something in between. Dogs are welcome by arrangement, which matters up here where most trails are better with a four-legged companion.

It's open all year, which tells you something about the heating and the kind of folk who run it. Campfires need checking on arrival—probably depends on the season and where you're pitched. Expect a mix of independence and comfort: not wild camping, not a hotel, but that useful middle ground when the hills have worn you out and the midges are biting.

John O'Groats Trail (Inverness to Culbokie)

Follows the southern shore of the Beauly Firth through mixed woodland and farmland with gentle to moderate inclines throughout. Suitable for older children but not buggies due to uneven forest paths and stiles. Dogs welcome on leads near livestock. Offers stunning coastal views across to the Black Isle, excellent birdwatching opportunities, and a genuine sense of remote Highland scenery just beyond Inverness's outskirts.

Slighe Blàr Chùil Lodair

Traces the historic Culloden Battlefield, where the 1746 Jacobite Rising met its brutal end. Mostly flat, well-maintained paths across open moorland with interpretive markers throughout. Excellent for families and accessible for buggies on main routes, though some memorial stones sit on grassy ground. Dogs welcome on leads (respectful of the memorial site). Offers a profound step into Scottish history with views across the moor where clans fought their final battle.

Trail of the 7 Lochs

Loops through the dramatic Highland landscape southwest of Inverness, connecting seven lochs across 80km of varied terrain—expect steep climbs, rocky paths, and boggy sections requiring proper boots. Not suitable for buggies or young children due to length, elevation changes, and remote stretches. Dogs welcome but need good recall as route crosses open moorland and farmland where livestock graze. Rewards walkers with stunning loch views, ancient woodland, waterfalls, and genuine Highland solitud
