You wake to the clank of climbing gear and crampons being sorted in the dark, headtorches bobbing as teams set off for Buachaille Etive Mòr before dawn.

This is a proper mountain refuge at the foot of the Buachaille, run by the Scottish Mountaineering Club — stark, functional, built for climbers and hill-goers who need shelter after long days on the ridges. It's not a campsite in the usual sense: there's space to pitch a tent outside, but the alpine hut itself is the draw, offering basic bunk accommodation when the weather turns or you've pushed too hard. Dog policy varies, so ask ahead if you're bringing one. The setting is pure Glen Coe drama — all scree, waterfalls, and towering buttresses.

Facilities are minimal and that's entirely the point. Check the campfire rules when you arrive, but expect to be self-sufficient. Year-round access means you might share the space with winter climbers racking up for gully routes or through-hikers on the West Highland Way. The vibe is quiet, respectful, utterly wild — a place where you nod at strangers over a brew and everyone understands why they're here.
