The shingle beach is close enough that you hear the waves at night through open windows, and in the morning the light off the Romney Marsh coastline floods the guest house rooms with that particular silvery quality you only get on the Kent coast.

This is a year-round spot that works equally well for couples after a quiet weekend by the sea, dog walkers exploring the miles of empty beach at Littlestone, or anyone wanting proper beds and a roof while still keeping close to the outdoors—there are camping pods alongside the main guest house for those who fancy something in between. The dog policy is flexible, so it's worth asking ahead if you're bringing a four-legged friend. Littlestone itself is beautifully low-key, all shingle and sky, with the vast flatlands of Romney Marsh inland and Dungeness a short drive down the coast.

WiFi's available if you need to stay connected, and campfires are a possibility—check when you arrive. The vibe is relaxed and unpretentious, the sort of place where you wake to seabirds and spend the day walking, then collapse gratefully into an actual bed.

Saxon Shore Way

Follows Kent's coastline for 162 miles from Gravesend to Hastings, tracing ancient Roman fortifications and tidal marshes. Terrain varies from flat seafront promenades and sea walls to gentle clifftop paths and shingle beaches – mostly accessible but some steep sections near Dover's white cliffs. Suitable for older children on shorter segments, though full route is too long and exposed for little ones; buggies impractical due to stiles, uneven surfaces and beach shingle. Dogs welcome but keep on
