The wind rattles the door at night, and you wake to absolute silence broken only by moorland birds — this is shelter in the old sense, a stone refuge miles from anywhere.

The Hovel is a mountain bothy for walkers who understand that wilderness camping means carrying everything in and leaving no trace. Bring a tent if you want your own space, or share the hut with whoever else has made the trek — there's an unspoken fellowship among bothy users that makes strangers into temporary companions. This is for self-sufficient campers who know how to navigate, pack light, and respect the code: leave it cleaner than you found it, take all rubbish out, be considerate of others.

Open year-round but entirely off-grid — no facilities, no warden, no booking system. Check the bothy code before you go. Dogs usually welcome but ask locally if you're unsure, and campfires depend on conditions and fire risk, so check on arrival or with the maintaining organisation. The atmosphere is raw, honest, and utterly remote — you earn your sleep here, and it's all the better for it.
