Rhymney River Circular

Follows the Rhymney River through mixed woodland and open meadows with mostly flat, well-maintained paths suitable for families and buggies on drier sections. Dogs welcome on leads near livestock. Expect some muddy stretches after rain and occasional gentle inclines where the path climbs away from the waterside. Popular for birdwatching and peaceful riverside scenery, with good opportunities to spot herons, kingfishers and waterfowl along this Cardiff valley route.

Rhymney Valley Ridgeway Walk

Follows the ridgeline above the Rhymney Valley with sustained steep climbs and exposed sections – definitely not suitable for buggies or very young children. Dogs welcome but keep them leashed near livestock on the hillside pastures. Rewards the effort with sweeping valley views across former mining communities and the Brecon Beacons beyond. Best tackled in sections given the elevation gain and rugged terrain throughout.

Penrhys Pilgrimage

Follows a historic pilgrimage path through the Rhondda Valley with moderate climbs over open hillsides and woodland paths. Terrain includes steep sections with uneven ground, making it challenging for buggies and young children—older kids who can handle longer walks will manage. Dogs welcome on leads near livestock. The route traces medieval pilgrims' steps to Penrhys, offering panoramic valley views and a fascinating glimpse into Welsh religious heritage, with the hilltop shrine as a rewarding
