The Brecon Beacons rise straight up from the valley floor here, close enough that you wake to see sunlight creeping down their flanks before it reaches your tent.

This is a proper base for walkers and mountain bikers tackling the Beacons, with space for tents, campervans and caravans. The Mid Wales countryside feels genuinely remote in places — Powys is all high moorland, red kites overhead, and market towns you can actually park in — though you're never far from a decent trail or a village shop. Families who want hills without the crowds tend to do well here, as do couples after dark skies and a bit of quiet.

There are toilets and showers onsite, and campfires are worth asking about when you arrive — policies vary depending on the season and how dry it's been. The feel is low-key and unpretentious, the kind of site where you pitch up, lace your boots, and get on with it.
