Pennine Way - Bowes Loop

Follows a gentle diversion from the main Pennine Way through pastoral farmland around Bowes village, offering flat to gently undulating terrain that's manageable for older children but less suitable for buggies due to stiles and potentially muddy field paths. Dogs welcome on leads near livestock. Worth doing for Roman fort remains at Bowes Castle and quieter countryside views away from the main trail's exposed moorland sections.

The 9km route passes old viaducts, mining heritage sites and riverside woodland, connecting West Auckland to Bishop Auckland with interpretive panels explaining the area's coal and railway history—genuinely fascinating if you're into heritage trails.
