The early mist lifts off the high moorland here, and you wake to the sound of curlews calling across the wild North Yorkshire fells.

This is proper rural camping — pitches for tents, campervans and caravans spread across a working farm in one of the most remote corners of the Dales. It suits walkers tackling the Pennine Way or Coast to Coast, couples after peace and proper dark skies, and anyone who wants to camp where sheep outnumber people ten to one. The landscape around Keld is all stone barns, rushing becks and heather-covered hillsides — it's as dramatic and unspoiled as Yorkshire gets.

Facilities are straightforward: toilets and showers onsite, and you're very much camping in farming country rather than a manicured park. Ask about campfires when you arrive. Expect a no-frills, genuinely off-the-beaten-track site where the silence at night is absolute and the stars feel close enough to touch.
